What is Liposuction?

In some areas of the body such as the thighs and stomach, stubborn body fat does not respond well to diet and exercise. Liposuction is the surgical removal of this excess fat, and results in a slimmed physique and improved contours of the body for a more sculpted, shapely figure.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available because of the many benefits it provides for patients who want to slim their figures. Benefits include the following:

  • A more sculpted, contoured physique
  • Effective on a wide range of areas
  • Removes 5-10 pounds of fat
  • Resolve sweating and chafing in areas where excess fat is causing skin rubbing
  • Improved confidence and self-esteem
  • Long-lasting effects–removed fat will not return
  • Eliminated fatty male breast tissue
  • Helps to inspire healthy eating and exercise habits

Good Candidates for Liposuction

Liposuction slims, trims, and contours areas of the body with excess fat. It’s a procedure best performed on individuals who have retained good skin flexibility. For older patients or those with less resilient skin, an added skin tightening procedure may be needed. During your liposuction consultation in Baton Rouge, Dr. Stephens will evaluate several factors such as your overall health, medical history, cosmetic goals, and expectations, and determine if fat reduction is right for you.

In addition, although liposuction can safely and effectively remove stubborn fat from the body, it’s important to understand that this procedure is not a substitute for diet and exercise — nor is it a solution for weight loss.

Candidates for liposuction include those who:

  • Have a specific goal in mind
  • Are at or near their target weight
  • Have areas of excess fat that do not respond to other methods
  • Are healthy non-smokers who don’t have any illnesses or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Are adults with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone

Personalized Care

Dr. J. Anthony Stephens will take all the time needed to discuss with you how your personal aesthetic vision can be achieved. Every patient is unique and comes to us with their own questions and concerns. We promise that you will never be rushed or pressured. We take great joy in helping our patients look and feel their best, and we invite you to meet with us at our private Baton Rouge clinic, where you will feel safe and exceptionally cared for.

How Does Liposuction Work?

During a typical liposuction procedure at our Baton Rouge practice, Dr. Stephens creates a tiny incision in the treatment area. He will then insert a cannula, which is a hollow tube that is moved back and forth to gently break fat apart. This fat is then extracted through vacuum suction.

The particular techniques used in liposuction will depend on the individual patient, as well as the extent of the procedure and the area being treated.

During your consultation, Dr. Stephens will discuss your treatment options with you and help you determine which one best fits your cosmetic goals.

Some patients may benefit from minimally invasive fat reduction, where the area to be treated is injected with local anesthetic requiring minimal or no sedation. And in some cases, the patients will actually stand up while the procedure is performed to achieve the best result.

Dr. Stephens and his staff are wonderful.

What Happens During the Liposuction Procedure?

Although liposuction is a procedure that can be done with many techniques, Dr. Stephens utilizes tumescent liposuction, which involves injecting a solution into the area to be treated. The solution is made up of saline, lidocaine for numbing and painkilling, and a small amount of adrenaline to reduce bleeding during the procedure.

This technique has also been proven to produce less swelling, less bruising, and a faster healing time. The procedure begins with these injections. Once this has been done, Dr. Stephens will employ one of two different approaches: suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL) or ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy (UAL).

The type of approach he uses for you will be determined by the quantity of fat that must be removed. In both methods, a tiny incision is made in an area where the scars will be hidden once you have healed. In SAL, a cannula (a small, thin tube) is inserted and moved back and forth beneath the skin, breaking up the fat layer and suctioning it out. In UAL, ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy the fat before it is suctioned out with a cannula.

The liposuction procedure may last from 1-5 hours depending on the amount of fat being removed. Dr. Stephens will use either local anesthesia or general anesthesia — again, depending on the size of the area(s) being treated as well as several other factors. During your pre-operative consultation, we will discuss which method is best for you.

What Risks are Involved?

Just like any other cosmetic procedure, tumescent liposuction poses some risks. However, in the hands of a gifted and experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Stephens, these risks are very minimal and rare.

The most common risks with tumescent liposuction are dimpling, lax skin, numbness, skin irregularity, lumpiness, infection, and scarring. If these side effects do happen, they can be corrected in the majority of cases. If you’re concerned about any of these risks, we encourage you to bring them up with Dr. Stephens during your consultation.

Recovery After Liposuction

After your liposuction procedure, drainage tubes, compression garments, and antibiotics may be needed to facilitate the healing process. You will be encouraged to walk as soon as you’re able, and the majority of patients return to work within a few days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month. Dr. Stephens will provide you with post-surgical instructions and inform you of all risks associated with liposuction.

You will immediately see the results, and your newly slimmed body will continue to improve over the next three months as swelling subsides.

We make sure that scars are small and inconspicuous, barely visible once you have healed.

Is liposuction a weight loss procedure?

While liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, patients will lose between 5-10 pounds of fat during surgery.

Will there be scars?

Liposuction requires tiny incisions, which Dr. Stephens will make in discrete locations. Liposuction scars generally fade quickly and are not easily visible.

What is the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck?

Liposuction and a tummy tuck are often performed together, but they are different procedures. Patients who would like to sculpt and slim their body in almost any area should have liposuction. Patients who have excess sagging skin, separated or weakened muscles, and small pockets of fat should have a tummy tuck, which addresses all of these things.

Will I gain the fat back?

Fat removed during a liposuction procedure will not return. However, if you gain enough weight, fat cells will still grow on other parts of the body.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Liposuction can be performed with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Your anesthesia options will be covered during your consultation with Dr. Stephens.
